Missing Mission.

If you follow my painting blog, perhaps you remember Mission? She co-starred in the painting Beau & Mission that I did for My friend Chelsea last year…

Well, It was the saddest day when Chelsea approached me with a broken heart in September – she had just lost her best friend, Mission had past away 3 days prior. She went on to say they were together for 11 years, all of Mission’s life. She had never felt a loss this painful, and really wasn’t prepared. They did everything together and she wasn’t sure how to go on.

My heart broke too. I wanted nothing more than to paint this portrait. Chelsea attached a photo from her iphone, that was the photo of Mission she asked me to paint.

Chelsea, I am so sorry for your loss. My heart is broken for you and all I can say is Mission was a lucky girl. She had the BEST life getting to hang by your side for 11 years. I hope it gets easier somehow, and that you feel better knowing that Mission is in heaven with a big huge smile on her adorable face.

Thanks for letting me paint her twice, she’s going to live forever in these pictures, paintings and memories =)

Love Always,

Marina

Doris.

Doris is my friends Spanish teacher, and she only had one picture of herself as a young lady, so my friend decided as a gift to get the photo painted.

For only having one photo of yourself, and what seems to be a passport photo – she sure is a photogenic beauty! Or in Spanish “eres muy bonita”

I loved the photo so much, I was honored to paint Doris.

Doris’s Passport photo.

My friend Jessica was over when I was painting this, and snapped a shot of me in action.

It turns out she was delighted and super surprised with the result. Hooray!!

Lindz & Fraz.

I was contacted by Kim who wanted a portrait of her kids. She sent me over at least a dozen awesome shots, but I chose to paint this one because they looked so happy… that it made me so happy too. I actually think I smiled the whole time I worked on it, and then I smiled when it was finished. I asked Kim a series of questions for the blog and the answers were so sweet and heartfelt that I thought I was share them “interview style” so you can get to know why the portrait was made. I completely understand where she is coming from too. Being away from home in New York has made me realize how much I love the people in my life, and how much I adore when we are together. Paintings and pictures make the memories last forever!!

Who is the portrait of?

K: Our 27-year old son Fraser and his 25-year old sister, Lindsay.

Why did you choose to get this portrait made?

K: Lindsay and Fraser are only 16 months apart and have always been very close. They share so much with each other and ask each other’s opinion on important decisions (even seeking approval on potential boyfriends or girlfriends!!) After Fraser graduated from high school, he went to a technical school here in Calgary for two years. When he finished his diploma he decided to travel to Australia for 8 months. As a parent, it was hard to see him go but I never realized how much they missed each other until the day he came home. One of the pictures I sent you captured the excitement on their faces when they saw each other again.

They are both back in school now, Fraser is at UBC in Vancouver doing a linguistics degree so that he can travel again and teach ESL (as a means to fund his wanderlust!). Lindsay is in a PhD program in Psychology in Saskatoon and will be there for four more years. We took them to Mexico last Christmas and as a demonstration of their gratitude for the family holiday, they arranged for a photographer to take several family pictures of us on the beach. Those pictures are precious to me as the times that we are able to get together are getting a lot tougher to arrange! One day, they will have families of their own but for now, I wanted to capture the happiness and joy of that day just watching our two children enjoy that moment. (Rats, now I’m getting all choked up!!)

Is there anything else you would like to share about the photograph?

K: I think that the previous answer covered most of my story. I wanted to do it as a way of letting them know how much it meant to me and now I will have that day captured on canvas.

How did you hear about letmepaintyou.com?

K: I read an article in the Calgary Herald’s Swerve magazine and absolutely loved the photograph and your painting style!

Are you happy with the way the painting turned out?

K: Absolutely over the moon!! Even though I have only seen it on my iphone, I am happy that Marina captured the essence of Fraser and Lindsay – they are two very special people and I will treasure this portrait forever! Thank you so much!

M: Awww, You are so welcome Kim! It was my absolute pleasure =)

Happily Ever After.

I was asked to paint a wedding gift for this beautiful couple, and when I was given literally hundreds of picture perfect photo’s to choose from, something about this shot was magical – I could feel their love so strongly. It’s truly amazing when you do not know the couple, but you are so excited to be part of their special day in some way, like a witness of true love.

I have a feeling this one is going to be a happily ever after story, and I hope that this painting hangs in your new life as husband and wife together for years to come.

Congratulations Kim and David, I wish you all the love and happiness in the whole world!

Love, Marina.

Misguided Goddess.

The first Misguided Goddess simply started from the idea of wanting to paint portraits of fabulous photography. I was drawn to the photography of Jamie Hodge and approached her to do a collaborative show of her photography and my artwork.

Since I started my artistic career in fashion and was experiencing creative withdrawal from crazy and exciting photo shoot fiascos, I knew this project would be a no brainer. As an artist with little to less experience then my peers, I wanted to start the project with the new and hungry talent that wanted a gig and a place to shine. In a way I figured we could all help each other out with our skills and determination all being a different part of the show. Amazingly talented makeup artists, designers, models and stylists with the same motive to work with on this pursuit of passion started walking through my door. Quite frankly I was blown away at the talent.

With the help of kind and generous friends, we found magnificent locations to shoot from the Lighthouse Park and residences in West Vancouver to Horse stables in Maple Ridge – I was humbled by the hearts of those who graciously donated their space for us to use as a setting for our shoots. I am still overwhelmed.

Misguided Goddess Part II
was also a huge success bringing on more talent introducing that talent to a wider audience, and the best part, we did it all for charity! All of Misguided Goddess proceeds have gone to Fuck Cancer.

Below are a few examples of my paintings painted for the show from Jamie Hodge and Karolina Turek.

I would like to thank Jamie and Karolina as well as all of the rest of the talent that made Misguided Goddess II a successRebecca Amber, Heather Pennell and James Williams for shooting such amazing photo’s. Tasha Defazio for styling these looks created above, Jessica W. Neujeim Tee Agnew and Kyla Charney for make up and modelling and Ania Taubenfligel,Venessa Facciotti, Nikki Danielle, Farah Noor, Yogita Grover, Maxe Roberts, Vanessa Martin and Ashleigh Eymann for shining in front of the camera.

You can see more artwork on the Misguided Goddess Facebook page. Misguided Goddess III coming 2012!

Gun Girl.

My girl Judy wanted me to paint a picture for her Best Friend Naz’s Birthday Present. She wanted something like… A painting of a girl with a gun, with a cityscape and smoke in the background. Sort of like Lara Croft tomb raider – warrior style. She wanted the girl to be “hot” with dark hair… like Naz, but not to make it look exactly like her since it’s not a portrait. Oh and Naz really likes anime….and she’s all about bling”

I must say, I think the result turned out pretty BAD ASS. I never know what to expect when I get custom orders, but in the end they are all worth the challenge. Naz got her birthday present on time and I get to add this awesome anime, cartoon – tomb raider inspired – Babe, holding a gun, covered in bling to add to my custom collection! Sweet.

Thanks for thinking of me Jud’s… to paint this for you and your bestie! What a great prezzy. I hope Naz LOVES it as much as I do!

Love Story.

This one is amazing.

The couple met at UBC during their undergrad. Tom was a national boxing champion and an A+ student (he would later study law at Harvard and become a very successful lawyer). He fell madly in love with a beautiful, smart, and kind Chinese girl (Connie) and wanted to marry her. His parents didn’t want him married at 18 so they shipped him off to the RCMP in Alberta, and they thus parted ways. But 40 years later, (and thanks to the internet) they found each other. So now at the tender age of 60, they are falling in love all over again and getting married!

This picture was when they were 18.

Also thanks to the internet , Amy found me and I got to be the gal to paint this amazing picture in watercolour. Amy was invited to their wedding because of her friendship with Tom (the groom). She wanted to give them a wedding present that reminds them of when they first fell in love. How sweet is that?

It’s a lovely story isn’t it?

Noah.

Noah is dream. That Fedora stole my heart. I was in love with the photo his talented photographer mom Ashley sent me. I took on this ambitious painting in Black and White – with a hint of color to highlight the features.

So who is this little cutie?

Well…In Ashley’s her words, “Noah is a lot of things…and avid Skateboarder…Dancer..with his own amazing sense of style. So the Fedora really was the perfect accessory for him. And when he wears it, he takes on a whole new persona….As, I think, reflected in the photo and now in the painting!”

Thanks for letting me share Noah on my blog =) I have a feeling he is going to be famous one day and I’ll be happy to say that I painted him first!!

You can see the Noah photo and more of Ashley’s Amazing Photography here.

Louise.

Louise was a beautiful lady who the world lost from Cancer. Her husband and daughter came to the Misguided Goddess – Fuck Cancer benefit in April and won the portrait that I donated to the silent auction. I was pretty lucky to get to paint such a beautiful soul. She is one of my most life like portraits to date – and I felt honored to have had the privilege to paint her lovely face. My heart goes out to her wonderful family ~ Thank you for letting me be a part of her memory.

Cancer sucks and takes away from us things that cannot be replaced. It is just another reason why we need to think about our actions and take advantage of early detection like the Fuck Cancer campaign promotes so blatantly.

Too bad she had to go this way ~ Ah but the wind is blowing cold tonight…
So good night Louise, good night. Rest in Peace.

The road to Baba’s house.

My father was born in Hercegovina, in a little town called Borajna. He always asks me to paint his home there and recently he chose three paintings he liked. These pictures my cousin Mario took are from last winter. I am no pro at painting landscapes but I love trying new things and it’s the first finished piece of the series that I wanted to share.

This is the road that leads to Baba Mara’s house. I wish she was still there, she was the cutest little grandma in the whole world.
